Saints versus sinners is this year’s theme. Alcohol and nudity are not permitted but “costumery and buffoonery” is to be expected.
Chasing waterfalls… and rainbows? Gorges State Park is about fifty five miles southwest of Asheville and is notorious for unique waterfalls, river gorges, and cliffs. Rainbow Falls is located in the Nantahala National Forest. Leave your car at Grassy Ridge parking area (in Gorges State Park) and walk out of the park into the National Forest, down to the Horsepasture River and then onward to Rainbow Falls. It is a moderate, three mile round-trip hike. Turtleback Falls Swimming Hole is a short stroll up-river. No lifeguards so please swim safely.
Starting on February 12, take an expedition through three hundred years of wedding attire at the Biltmore Estate. The exhibition will be debuting forty wedding gowns and tuxedos from films set in 1645 to 1935. Featured is a re-creation of Cornelia Vanderbilt’s wedding gown worn in 1924. Keep in mind, Biltmore Blooms: Festival of Flowers begins March 19, culminating in two must-see events, especially for newlyweds.
Wander through the 1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage’s lush, award-winning garden. Witness an amazing range of blooms and blossoms through your bedroom window. Mulched beds dawning with alluring, early risers like crocus and daffodils and hyacinths and tulips. Flowering cherry and Japanese dogwoods shade our walkways. Sweet violets contrive colorful paths. Listen to water rush by and church bells ring in the distance all while comfortably seated, near the outdoor fireplace, beside a waterfall koi pond. Remember to ask about outdoor ceremonies in advance. Spring has almost sprung.
