Tradition of Christmas at the Biltmore Estate

Christmas at the Biltmore EstateThe luxurious and elegant home of George and Edith Vanderbilt was completed and officially opened to friends and family on Christmas Eve in 1895. The evening marked the tradition of a beautifully decorated, festive Christmas. Today, Christmas at the Biltmore Estate is inspired by the Christmas of 1895, with designers guided by written documentation of the first event hosted by George Vanderbilt. The planning begins one year in advance by selecting an annual theme inspired by stories from the Vanderbilts’ time. To learn more about how the team at the Biltmore transforms over 5 floors of rooms and acres of gardens and grounds into a Christmas delight, read How Biltmore Decorates for Christmas.
