Chocolate Asheville, and the 1889 WhiteGate Inn

The subject of Chocolate is always a popular one in Asheville, and at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn, the sweet life is taken seriously. Guests may experience our signature Flour-less Chocolate Torte with a Warm Raspberry Coulis as part of their three-course breakfast at our Asheville B&B. Yes, chocolate can be experienced at breakfast – and we have served several chocolate-based desserts that we surprise our guests with at the WhiteGate Inn.

Local businesses featuring chocolate continue to expand in Asheville. The Chocolate Fetish has a 25-year history and is well known for its signature truffles. The biggest success story in Asheville has to be the French Broad Chocolate Lounge, started by Dan and Jael Rattigan in 2008. We always tell our guests they have to experience this popular three-story chocolate emporium on South Lexington Avenue. Comparisons to “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” are not exaggerated, as the couple will be opening their own chocolate factory in downtown Asheville this spring. The chocolate will be made in a 4,000 square foot space, which will have a rooftop production deck complete with a solar roaster.

Visitors can experience chocolate in a different way at The Biltmore Estate. You can sign up for a red wine and chocolate seminar at the Biltmore Estate Winery, free with the estate admission. The new annual Chocolate Festival, featuring all things chocolate in Asheville, provides visitors with a chance to sample chocolates, chocolate pastries, chocolate Martinis and more.

The following chocolate shops are located downtown and are within walking distance to our Asheville Bed and Breakfast. In fact, walking back to the Inn and burning off a few of calories might be a good idea! Old Europe, The Chocolate Fetish, French Broad Chocolate Lounge and Kilwin’s are all great choices.

As Innkeepers, it is always fun to check out the local shops, so we can make recommendations to our guests based on personal experience. Based on a lot of dining experiences involving chocolate and desserts, we recommend two chocolate-based desserts in particular.

The first is found at the Bavarian Lodge, located north of Asheville. This is a restaurant serving the best German food, prepared from authentic family recipes. The dessert that we always have is called Schwarzwalder Kirsch. It’s a warm Black Forest Cake served in a parfait glass with hot strawberry filling, Black Cherry ice cream and topped with whipped cream.

The second must-try dessert is a specialty offered at Never Blue, a new restaurant located downtown, just a few blocks from our Asheville B&B. It’s called the Brownie and is described as follows, “A double-fudge brownie topped with a layer of dark chocolate ganache, wrapped in buttered phylo dough and baked to a crispy bliss, served with homemade salted pecan praline ice cream, vanilla bean cream anglaise, and dark chocolate sauce.” Does that make your mouth water or what?!!
