“Christmas at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage”

Now that Thanksgiving is here it’s time to decorate for Christmas at our Asheville Bed and Breakfast. We’ve always tried not to rush the season and many of our guests have told us they are glad that we wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate. Fall is such a wonderful season and our fall decoration stay in place until Friday after Thanksgiving. Our goal is to have the Christmas decorating completed by December 1st.

It’s not unusual now to see Christmas decorations in the stores well before Halloween. Christmas decorating in the Asheville area comes early and we “blame” this on the Biltmore Estate, which is fully decorated by the first weekend in November. The Biltmore does take on a magical effect because they open the Estate at night for candlelight tours. The Biltmore Estate does over a third of their business for the entire year during the nine-week period they are decorated for Christmas. Many of our guests at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn come to Asheville to visit the Biltmore during this period.

Christmas decorating at our Bed and Breakfast in Asheville continues to evolve. It was much easier to find a place for the 1st floor Christmas tree several years ago before we redecorated the living room. Once we bought the 1904 Kimball baby grand and brought in other family antiques, the tree was positioned in the dining room. As we have expanded from 5 rooms to 11 rooms and suites, we now have seating for up to 24 in our dining room. We noticed that there is no room for the tree there, so it will be in the Solarium this year.

There will be a total of 12 decorated trees when we are finished. Every guest room has a tree, and other decorations depending on the available space at our Asheville Bed and Breakfast. The Solarium, Dining Room, Living Room, and Parlor are all decorated and we are particularly proud of our decorated mantles in the Parlor and Living Room.

For many years we did a lot of decorating outside. The peak of our outdoor decorating was three years ago; the first Christmas after our 1905 Bungalow was renovated and opened. We had icicle lights covering the Bungalow, the Carriage House, the Cottage, and outside the Solarium. There were large lighted wreaths on various buildings and a number of trees and shrubs were covered with lights.

We have taken a simpler, “Green” approach the last two years and will continue that theme this year. There will be no icicle lights and only the large Colorado Blue Spruce will have the old fashioned colored lights. Natural materials are collected from the gardens and used to create wreaths and swags on the front door and in other areas. We still use the large lighted wreaths and have many interesting trees and shrubs that are focal points of our night lighting.

We love the way our property looks at night and Christmas only adds to the appeal. Our guests also love the special feel of our Asheville Bed and Breakfast during the holidays and the whole staff feels all that hard work is definitely worth it!
