“Asheville a Great Destination for Vegetarians and Vegans”

Asheville has always been known as a vegetarian-friendly city, and continues to grow stronger in all things vegetarian. The Laughing Seed is well-known to visitors and locals, and is one of our favorite places to eat. Frank and Ralph had lunch last week on a beautiful fall day and sat outside. The Laughing Seed has the best soups and salads in town and is a great place to watch the people go by on Wall Street.

Lunch today was at a new restaurant called Plant, located a short 3-block walk form the 1889 WhiteGate Inn & Cottage. It is on the edge of Chestnut Hills District, filled with historic homes and beautiful architecture. Plant has only been open a few weeks and is already drawing a crowd who appreciates the quality of the food, prepared from fresh local ingredients. The farm-to-table concept is strong in Asheville and continues to grow, benefiting our local farmers and the restaurant clientele.

Plant, a completely vegan restaurant, describes itself as “A restaurant with roots; sophisticated scratch-made food from the earth.” The Chef and partner, Jason Sellars, was the chef at the Laughing Seed for a number of years before taking on this new venture.

Frank and Ralph thoroughly enjoyed the meal and talking to owners Alan Berger and Leslie Armstrong. Leslie cleared up the confusion over what vegan really means. Nothing is consumed that is an animal or a by-product of any animal. Ralph, who grew up on barbeque and “fried everything” was amazed by the peppercorn crusted seitan and the fresh sauces and vegetables. Alan surprised us at the end of the meal by offering a sampling of their house-made ice cream made with coconut milk, which were delicious.

One of the fun aspects of owning a Bed and Breakfast is trying out the great restaurants that Asheville has to offer, so that we can recommend them to our guests. After our experience at Plant, we now have another vegan restaurant we can highly recommend. We are accustomed to guests at the WhiteGate Inn who have dietary restrictions or allergies, and our new chef, Allen Tucker, enjoys the challenge of giving them a tasty breakfast at our Asheville NC Inn.
