June is normally the time we think about romance since historically this is a month when we see so many engagements and weddings. This June 2012, Cupid must have been shooting a lot of extra arrows at the 1889 WhiteGate Inn, our Asheville N.C. Bed and Breakfast.
One Saturday, a couple of weeks ago, Ralph was tidying up the gardens for a garden wedding scheduled for later in the afternoon. Garden weddings can be a little tricky to schedule because of weather concerns, but we always have a contingency plan to do the wedding inside our Asheville b&b if necessary It was a beautiful, partly-cloudy day with highs in the low 70′s.
Ralph noticed a couple wandering the garden on the other side of the stream and did not pay too much attention until he saw the gentleman go down on one knee and hold out a box to his obviously surprised girlfriend. Not wanting to intrude on the moment, Ralph quietly crossed the bridge and disappeared into the landscape. The couple was staying in our Maya Angelou Suite, one of our most romantic and private luxury accommodations at our Asheville bed and breakfast.
The Saturday afternoon wedding couldn’t have been more perfect. Extra blooming flowers in hanging baskets, and baskets of ferns were brought in and placed at the edge of the lush foliage. The bride and groom exchanged vows in front of their friends and relatives, surrounded by the expansive gardens with the gentle sound of the waterfalls in the background. Following the ceremony, the wedding party made their way to the lawn gardens and pond where toasts were made all around. This is the area where we host our wine and hors d’oeuvre socials every evening. We are lucky to have such a large outdoor area that will seat over 20 guests either in the sunny fire-pit patio area or under the solarium, where it is shady and cool.
Our newlyweds and our just engaged couple were acknowledged at breakfast the next morning with applause from all our other guests. We also recognized a delightful couple from California who were celebrating their 55th wedding anniversary. One of our other guests said “Hold It” and left the dining room. She came back momentarily with her violin and serenaded the couple! Love is truly in the air at our Asheville bed and breakfast.
We are truly blessed as Innkeepers to be able to share in our guests special moments, and this weeding was especially rewarding. Now in our 14th year as innkeepers our Asheville bed and breakfast, Frank and Ralph are enjoying the WhiteGate Inn more than ever.
