Western North Carolina Orchid Society Annual Orchid Show

bed and breakfast orchidThe 1889 WhiteGate Greenhouse is full of blooming orchids ready to place in the WNC Orchid Society exhibit on March 24th. Over 60 orchids are in bloom now at our Asheville bed and breakfast, and about 25 will be featured in the show. This is the peak time for orchid bloom and that is why you see so many orchid shows scheduled this time of the year.

The NC Arboretum will again be the location for our annual show. Five Orchid Societies and ten vendors will be putting in displays on Thursday. Judging will start at 9am on Friday. Ribbon judging will last about four hours followed by the Judge’s Luncheon. American Orchid Society (AOS) judging takes place after lunch. Last year a record 13 AOS awards were given, an unusual number, reflecting the quality of the orchids displayed in our show. In fact, the WNCOS show has become the largest orchid show in the southeast, not including Florida.

Frank and Ralph will be helping with registration on Thursday and serving on the judging teams on Friday morning. Friday night is the Preview Party for Arboretum members and Frank and Ralph look forward to relaxing and enjoying the entertainment, looking at the exhibits, and visiting with the vendors, many of whom have become friends over the years.

The show opens to the public on Saturday morning and continues until 5pm on Sunday. A number of educational programs will be given throughout the weekend for the beginner and the expert. At 5:01pm Sunday the show is taken out. It’s pretty chaotic as all the vendors and orchid societies are breaking down the exhibits at the same time and moving out of the building. One tradition that always helps is the passing around of some fine wine to ease the pain!

Ralph is determined to not bring any more orchids back to the WhiteGate Inn greenhouse but we shall see. In any event, it is always fun to show our guests through the greenhouse at our Asheville inn and introduce them to the exotic world of orchids.
